(...) The genre of the diorama, which can be defined as a staged, artificial environment, creates further intentional disturbances in the perception of the exhibition space. For the time of this exhibition such premises of reality as space and time become unlocalizable, together with the spatial relation of inside and outside. A once organic plant is presented on an abstract metal frame in the interior of a sterile gallery, which is redefined by strong lights coming from behind of curtains of seemingly new windows and doors created by the artist. The aforementioned interventions are crucially altering the perception of the space of Trafó Gallery, as they open new perspectives for the diorama. The installation entitled Shadow Space on the other can remind the viewers on such constructions as security towers of historical prisons over which one’s senses can’t have complete control. ...

Bernsteinzimmer (2010) by the Romanian-born Hungarian artist István Csákány is a detailed and complex reconstruction, completely in wood, of a private atelier. The effect of artistic alienation brought about by the completely wooden construction gives the untidy cellar room, which seems to have been just recently abandoned, something of the effect of a metaphorical mise en abyme, a figurative repetition: an interior reflecting the everyday, ordered chaos of a man who takes refuge in his tinkering and who has portrayed his own prosaic reality at life size.

In fact, with this atelier, Csákány recalls that of his father, the memory of which is today as rough to him as the wooden design of the work. At the same time, this highly elaborate and skilfully built replica of a typical kind of refuge seems to move within the deep-blue space of the museum pavilion like an interstellar time capsule detached from space and time, which the viewer looks into as into a foreign world.

With Bernsteinzimmer, Csákány additionally underlines how important skilled artistic work carried out in a collective is for art, as he also does with the title's reference to the famous Amber Room. This masterpiece of Baroque craftsmanship, which has become almost legendary owing to its mysterious disappearance in the Second World War, was sent to Saint Petersburg from Berlin in 1716 as a present by the Prussian King Frederick William I to Czar Peter the Great. It was not just the perfect product of a masterly collaboration between now-forgotten amber carvers with its creator, Andreas Schlüter: its material and its history also gave the work a complicated temporal structure that was interesting for the Hungarian artist.

14 zeitgenössische, international renommierte Künstlerinnen und Künstler aus den 14 Ländern des Donauraumes wurden anlässlich der donumenta Jubiläumsausstellung 2012 in Regensburg eingeladen, ihr Land, ihre Gesellschaft, das Leben ihrer Mitbürger zu erkunden und zwei Fotos für diese Ausstellung zur Verfügung zu stellen.

Die Formel „14 x 14 – Vermessung des Donauraumes.“ gleicht einer Einladung, die Kunst als Parameter zu wählen, um am Beispiel des Donauraumes individuelle, europäische und globale Wirklichkeiten und Utopien kennenzulernen und zu reflektieren. Darüber hinaus wird mit „14 x 14“ die Fähigkeit von Künstlerinnen und Künstlern zur Übernahme von Verantwortung und Transformation von Wirklichkeit bezeichnet. Denn es ist der Künstler, der in seinen Werken die Welt neu vermisst. Sein unvoreingenommener Blick auf den Anderen und das Andere eröffnet neue Perspek-tiven. Die Makroregion ‚Donau’ präse

A multi-disciplinary project co-produced by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Belgrade (MoCAB) and ARTIUM Basque Museum-Centre of Contemporary Art

The project explores “invisible violence” as it is discernable within quotidian, domestic, work-related, and everyday life; administrative and bureaucratic violence; visual violence in advertising and media; as well as subtle forms of sectarianism and community animosity arising from recent historical circumstances. These are forms of violence that are arguably globally omnipresent. These comparisons of violence shall be explored by bringing together artists’ work that are problematizing territorial, nationalistic, mythological and identity-related topics in a topical fashion, without being bogged down by dualistic, partitioned or oppositional representations.
The theme of violence as a subject for an exhibition is naturally a sensitive and often provocative one, and sometimes generative of Manichean definitions of “us and them.” Therefore, with this project, it is an aim to resist undue focus on issues of war, genocide and extreme violence, while enabling these to be a tangible, if unseen backdrop to the project. The violence being predominantly explored – that which is depicted or investigated in the invited artists’ work - is forms of violence within language, within representation, as a result of shifting socio-economic conditions, and shifting ideas and policies that may be identified as enacting a “cultural” violence upon geo-political bodies and individuals. This does not mean that these more topical and more pronounced forms of violence (terrorism, war, ethnic cleansing and genocide) are explicitly avoided in this exhibition, but that instead they do not dominate the field of references, which itself aims to cast several beacons on different forms of cultural and contemporary violence simultaneously. Additionally, a variety of obstacles that appeared during the production of this overall project, which ironically may be defined as key examples of invisible violence, will be presented and deciphered alongside the exhibition and its discourses. Originally a three-country project, and now touring between Serbia and Spain without an Irish partner, the processes of this project’s development had unexpectedly and inadvertently uncovered forms of invisible violence.

The publication gives an overview of István Csákány's recent artistic production, the large-scale 2012 installation Ghost Keeping and his new installation Les Statutes Meurent Aussi (in cooperation with Hajnalka Somogyi) shown at the Bonnefantenmuseum. The publication is a presentation of a group of artworks and projects by Csákány and a survey of the artistic and social issues they explore.
"His works present transformations, disappearances, and lingering late-modernist myths. Not a stranger to physical labour and building construction himself, his projects explore various notions of work: that of an artisan, of an industrial worker, and of a contemporary artist; through the figure of the worker – who is either absent or modeled of the artist – he points to endgames of modernity, and to empty spaces and new constellations that might as well be activated in the near future. At the same time, his practice of sculpturally transposing objects (often machines) and whole environments into a single material, as if freezing them in time, as well as the extremely laborious, time-demanding process of producing some of these installations, manifests a strong need to remember, and to take care of memories."

Beating Around the Bush is an exhibition programme for 2014, in which the Bonnefantenmuseum will be presenting its collection in an investigative way. In four episodes, both the fixed values and the ‘quiet reserve’ of the collection will be brought into dialogue with new and proposed acquisitions. In addition, interventions in the form of small solo presentations will function as mirrors to reflect new content-related insights and perspectives. Each episode has a different thematic angle, through which the individual artists’ practices will be explored, as well as the museum collection as a whole and associated movements. Beating Around the Bush Episode #1 explores how contemporary artists deal with universal and timeless questions about the condition humaine, or human condition; questions about the origin of things, as well as their loss or disappearance. How does art relate to visible reality, and what other realities are depicted? What personal mythologies do artists develop in their work, and what overlap is there with religion and mysticism?
